winds dropped a tree on house in the 700 block of South Sixth Street, the
Chesterton Fire Department said.
Lt. Brandon Smith
told the Chesterton Tribune today that, at 4:22 p.m., firefighters
responded to the scene, to find the tree fallen onto the house’s roof and
resting on an arcing NIPSCO power line.
The line, in turn,
ignited the tree, which eventually burned through the wire, cutting power to
much of the neighborhood, Smith said.
point--around 4:55 p.m.--the CFD cleared the scene, with the exception of
Fire Chief John Jarka, who remained to monitor the situation until a NIPSCO
crew arrived about 10 minutes later.
No one was injured
in the incident, Smith said, and while the tree did do damage to the house
it appeared not to have breached the roof.
