Chesterton firefighters assisted the Porter Fire Department on Wednesday in the extrication of a state highway worker from his vehicle, following a crash on I-94.

Capt. Aimee Gilbert of the CFD told the Chesterton Tribune today that, at 1:34 p.m., both departments were dispatched to the 24.5 mile marker in the westbound lanes of I-94 after an INDOT employee’s vehicle was struck--apparently by a cattle hauler--sending the INDOT truck through a guard rail, down an embankment, and into the rear yard of a residence in the 400 block of Wagner Road.

Firefighters were forced to cut the driver’s door from the INDOT truck, Gilbert said.

The INDOT employee himself seems to have escaped with minor injuries, she added.

The Indiana State Police responded to the scene but as of deadline today had not released a report.

The CFD cleared the scene at 2:04 p.m.
