Chesterton firefighters responded to a fire on Wednesday in Comcast/xFinity box at the Eagle Crossing apartments, at the intersection of Rail Road and Kelle Drive in Coffee Creek Center.

Fire Chief John Jarka told the Chesterton Tribune today that, at 12:48 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to 2211 Kelle Drive after a fire was reported outside the building. They found on their arrival that a utility box attached to the building on the front porch was burning and quickly doused the blaze with a dry chemical extinguisher and water can.

Firefighters checked the building for extension and found none.

On further investigation, it was found that a Comcast/xFinity “node”--which transitions fiber option cable into coaxial cable--had caught fire. The cause of the fire remains undetermined, as “all items in the outdoor box were consumed by the fire,” Jarka said.

Because the node is supplied by an electric meter and has connections underground near other utilities, NIPSCO gas and electric service personnel responded to the scene as well to ensure their utilities were undamaged, Jarka added.

The CFD cleared the scene at 1:10 p.m.
