Chesterton firefighters responded to an absolute blaze of a semi fire on I-94 in Pine Township on Monday.

Deputy Fire Chief Nate Williams told the Chesterton Tribune today that, at 5:53 p.m., the CFD was dispatched to the eastbound lanes of I-94 at the 32 mile marker, just this side of the LaPorte County line, after the Indiana State Police reported a semi with “flames showing from the rear tires.” On their arrival, firefighters confronted a tractor and a wagon-style trailer--the latter loaded with plate steel--both fully involved.

The CFD--assisted by the Coolspring Township FD--used 3,700 gallons of water, mixed with foam, to douse the blaze but both the tractor and trailer were a total loss. “There was nothing left of the truck,” Williams said. “You could see the chassis but it was all burned up.”

The CFD believes the cause of the fire was a malfunction in the rig’s brakes. The trucker, driving for Knaggs Trucking of Carsonville, Mich., escaped injury.

Meanwhile, after the ISP closed all three lanes of eastbound I-94, traffic backed up as far as five miles west of the scene, to around the 27.5 mile marker, this side of the scales. “People were getting out of their cars and just milling around on the interstate, talking to each other,” Williams said.

The CFD cleared the scene at 6:43 p.m.
