Chesterton firefighters assisted the Liberty Township Volunteer department
at a tricky little garage fire on Wednesday.
The call came in, at 5:43 p.m., as an arcing electrical panel in an attached
garage in the 800 block of Tanner Drive, Capt. Tony Coslet told the
Chesterton Tribune today.
And arcing it was. Although the fire itself was “minimal” and firefighters
managed to contain it to the immediate area around the breaker box,
firefighters were unable actually to get into the wall to check for
extension due to continual arcing caused by the live current, Coslet said.
Firefighters were forced to use a dry chemical extinguisher until a NIPSCO
crew arrived at the scene to pull the meter, Coslet noted. Then an
application of water duly doused it.
“It could have been a good working fire,” Coslet added.
The CFD cleared the scene at 7 p.m.
The LTVFD is investigating the cause. No estimate of damage or further
information was available this morning.
