Town of Burns Harbor residents can now enroll in a new municipal notification service, to receive text messages or e-mails of breaking emergency news, the Burns Harbor Police Department said.

Messages may include dangerous weather or law enforcement-related alerts, as well as other relevant safety and community event information,” the BHPD said in a statement released on Tuesday.

The service is provided by Nixle Community Information Service, which will allow the BHPD “to create and publish messages to be delivered to subscribed residents instantly via cell phone text message and/or e-mail,” the BHPD said. “Notifications can also be accessed on line at Nixle’s website at www.nixle.com

“Several members of our community have inquired about a notification service that would allow the Police Department to reach out to them so that we can keep them informed and aware of important information, such as dangerous weather, road closures, and general information,” Police Chief Craig Barnes said. “The Burns Harbor Police Department is dedicated to providing a high level of law enforcement, public safety, and service to the citizens of this town and hope that everyone takes advantage of this service.”

Register for the service at www.nixle.com
