The body of a Merrillville woman who went missing Monday evening in the waters of Lake Michigan off Miller Beach in Gary was recovered on Tuesday, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources is reporting.

The body of Tiara Hardy, 24, was identified at approximately 5:30 p.m. some 150 yards offshore by Indiana Conservation Officers using side-scan sonar, the DNR said, and divers subsequently located and recovered it at 6 p.m.

Harvey was swimming with two friends around 7:45 p.m. Monday when the three attempted to return to shore because of high waves and strong currents. Harvey’s friends were assisted to shore by a good Samaritan but Harvey was seen to go under and not return to the surface.

Associated Press was reporting that, on Monday night, the National Weather Surface had issued a beach hazard statement for Northwest Indiana due to dangerous waves and currents. There were no lifeguards on duty at the time of Harvey’s disappearance and an unidentified Gary official told the AP that warning flags are removed when lifeguards go off duty.
