A motorist was critically injured on Saturday in a two-vehicle accident which forced the closure of Ind. 49 at C.R. 500N, Valparaiso Police said.

According to police, at 10:50 a.m. a semi-tractor trailer southbound on Ind. 49 rear-ended a passenger vehicle stopped for a traffic signal at the intersection of Ind. 49.

The impact of the collision pushed the passenger vehicle into the intersection, trapping the driver inside the vehicle and necessitating his extrication by the Valparaiso Fire Department, police said.

The driver of the passenger vehicle--whose name the VPD did not release--was airlifted to a Chicago hospital “due to his critical condition,” police said.

Ind. 49 was closed in the area for two hours.

Investigation of the crash is ongoing.
