ArcelorMittal describes fire at plate mill as minor

ArcelorMittal is describing the fire early Saturday morning in a control room of the 160-inch plate mill at its Burns Harbor facility as “minor.”

The fire broke out just before midnight on Friday, in a control room for one of the plate mill’s shear lines, the company said in a statement released after deadline on Monday. “As a precaution, mutual aid from five area fire departments responded. Two employees were checked onsite for possible smoke inhalation with no findings.”

The rolling mill was expected to be returned to service today, ArcelorMittal added, although more time will be required to repair the shearing line. “We will be in close communication with any affected customers and anticipate only minimal, if any, impact on our ability to meet customer demand.”

The fire remains under investigation by the company, ArcelorMittal said.
