A sixth costly copper theft reported in Dune Acres

Back To Front Page

The Porter County Sheriff’s Police is investigating the theft of building materials from a work site on Circle Drive in Dune Acres.

According to police, sometime between 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, and 8 a.m. Wednesday someone removed four L-shaped sheets of copper roofing, 10’ x 2’ x 1’, and 10 strips of copper fascia, 10’ x 5’’ x 5’’, being installed on a home by a Schererville contractor. All of the copper was a heavy gauge of 20 oz., police said, and most of it was taken from the garage, although no sign of forced entry was found.

Police put the total loss at $4,800.

This theft is at least the sixth one of copper reported this fall in Dune Acres. The other five involved the theft of air-conditioners from homes on Pine Lane, Shore Drive, and West Road, going back to September. The total estimated loss from all five A/C thefts: $19,900.

Police did say that, on Sept. 25, a contractor working at a residence on Pine Lane reported talking to the driver of a “rusty older gold-colored minivan,” who had stopped to ask if anyone lived next door. “The contractor asked the subject why he was asking and the driver of the minivan advised that he was looking to purchase real estate in Dune Acres.”
