A Union Township woman died Wednesday from injuries suffered in a fire at her home in the Shorewood Forest subdivision, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.

The victim was identified as Almeda Morales, 37.

Sgt. Larry LaFlower told the Chesterton Tribune today that Morales was airlifted to a Chicago hospital, where she later died.

The incident occurred shortly before 12 p.m., when Morales’ 19-year-old son, sleeping in the basement of their home at 422 Pickwick Place, awoke to the smell of smoke, LaFlower said. He called 911. Then, a minute or two later, another 911 was received, this one from a neighbor to the north, who reported that a “severely burned woman was knocking on her door.”

LaFlower said that Morales reportedly suffered third degree burns to more than 50 percent of her body.

The fire itself was confined to Morales bedroom and was “pretty much out” by the time firefighters arrived.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office was at the scene Wednesday night investigating the incident.
