A Gary man may have been the victim of a Facebook scam, after he tried to
pick up a television and laptop computer at Wal-Mart which Portage Police
said had been ordered on line with stolen credit card numbers.
According to
police, at 7:56 p.m. Tuesday the man went to the Wal-Mart at 6087 U.S.
Highway 6 to collect the electronics but an employee determined that the TV
had been purchased using a credit card reported stolen from a Wall Township,
N.J., resident.
The man—who was
listed as “an alternate individual allowed to pick up the items”—for his
part advised police that he had been asked by a Facebook friend named
“Rosemond” to collect the merchandise and ship them to Ghana in West Africa.
The man further advised that he has been in “constant contact with Rosemond
on the Internet and has seen her a couple of times through a web camera,” he
“denied knowing anything about the credit cards being stolen,” and stated
“that he was a Christian and was trying to help someone in Africa, whom he
fell in love with over the Internet.”
