An unidentified woman was struck and killed by a train on Tuesday along the CSX right-of-way near the 5000 block of U.S. Highway 20, Portage Police said.

According to police, at 10:03 p.m. CSX reported that a white female subject had been hit by an eastbound train as she was walking along the tracks just behind Don’s Motel at 5550 U.S. 20.

Police said that Porter County Coroner Vicki Deppe took custody of the body and was attempting to make a positive identification to be able to notify family.

The accident remains under investigation, police said.
