A Hobart man driving the wrong way on I-80 early this morning in Lake County
collided with a semi and was killed, the Indiana State Police said.
The victim was identified as Timothy J. Leib, 35.
According to police, sometime prior to 1:30 a.m. Leib had entered the
eastbound lanes of I-80 but was traveling the wrong way, westbound, in a
Honda Ridgeline pickup truck when he collided head on with a semi-tractor
trailer, at the 11.8 mile marker two miles east of the Broadway exit.
The semi’s driver, Kevin J. Windsor, 41, of Lothian, Md., advised police
that he had been eastbound in the right center lane when a semi in front of
his swerved suddenly. Windsor’s rig then struck Leib’s pickup.
Leib was pronounced dead at the scene.
Windsor’s tractor sustained heavy front-end damage but there was no load
loss, police said.
Police said that the results of a routine toxicology screen on Leib are
pending.
All lanes of traffic were re-opened at 4:30 a.m.
