The Indiana State Police said a Valparaiso woman suffered massive internal injuries in an early morning crash today on I-65.

Police said Jennifer L. Meece, 36, was driving northbound in the southbound right lane of I-65, about one mile north of the U.S. 30 exit, at 2:15 a.m., when she struck an oncoming vehicle head-on.

Police said the other driver, Guy Vafiadis, 55, of Merrillville, did not remember seeing a vehicle before the crash. Police said it is unknown if Meece’s headlights were on at the time of the crash.

Police said Meece was taken to Southlake Methodist Hospital in Merrillville and was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

Vafiadis was also taken to Southlake with a fractured jaw and ankle, police said.

Both vehicles -- Meece’s 1997 Ford Escort and Vafiadis’ 1996 Chevrolet Caprice -- were totaled, police said.
