Search continues for two escaped Indiana inmates

The search for inmates Lance Battreal and Mark Booher who escaped from the Indiana State Prison continues, a spokesperson for the prison.

Charles Smith was captured yesterday and is back inside the Indiana State Prison.

The Indiana State Police called off the manhunt early yesterday evening in the Grand Beach, Michigan area where Smith had been captured.

They are continuing to follow up on additional leads provided by the public and by prison officials to find the two remaining escapees.

Mark Levenhagen, Superintendent at the Indiana State Prison reports the facility is still on a lockdown status.

Staff have been replacing the broken bars and gates in the tunnels. The Department of Correction is researching additional methods to increase security in these areas.

It is known that two of the escapees had worked as assistants with maintenance staff at the prison. Whether they ever worked in the tunnels or under what circumstances, is still under investigation.

Anyone with information that may assist with the capture of Battreal and Booher are encouraged to contact their local law enforcement agency.

Commissioner Ed Buss advised The Indiana Department of Correction uses an automated “ALERT” notification system to make the public aware of emergency situations. Anyone can register by calling toll free at 866-949-2537.
