A Valparaiso motorcyclist died Sunday in a two vehicle accident on Division Road in Union Township, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.

The victim has been identified as Dave A. Schubert II, 36. He was pronounced dead at St. Mary’s Hospital in Hobart.

According to police, at 3:54 p.m. Schubert was eastbound in the 600 west block of Division Road when he crossed the center line on his 1986 Harley-Davidson Soft Tail to avoid turkeys in the road. Police said that he collided head-on with a 2002 Toyota Avalon which had just crested a hill westbound on Division Road.

The driver of the Toyota was Liadakis A. Stamatios, 23 of Valparaiso.

A witness advised police that Schubert tried to lay his motorcycle down at the same moment Stamatios struck him. Stamatios advised that he had no chance to avoid impact.

Stamatios sustained an arm injury, police said.
