Chesterton Police have taken the report of a resident whose debit card was used to make unauthorized charges.

According to police, on June 4 the resident discovered that her bank balance was in the red by $2,001.84, immediately checked for her debit card, and found it to be missing. The victim advised police that the card had to have been lost sometime between May 27 and June 2, during which time, police said, someone deposited a fraudulent check into her account and began withdrawing large sums from Chicagoland ATMs and making large purchases at Wal-marts.

The victim contacted her bank, Chase, to report the card lost and to advise them of the situation. The victim “stated that she was informed to file a claim disputing the charges to her account,” police said. “Chase denied the claim for disputed charges, and informed her that only if local law enforcement caught the person making the charges would they reverse the charges.”

The victim further advised that all the charges occurred in Olympia Fields, Ill, and Aurora, Ill., none of them in Chesterton.
