A Hammond man was in custody today in connection with a double homicide
early Saturday morning in Center Township, the Porter County Sheriff’s
Police said.
The PCSP was not releasing the suspect’s name this morning but said that he
was expected to be formally charged sometime this afternoon.
According to police, at 2:13 a.m. PCSP and Valparaiso Police officers were
dispatched to the residence at 1558 W. Lincolnway in rural Center Township
in response to a report of a disturbance. On their arrival officers found a
man identified as Jeffery Trinka, 40, of Valparaiso, dead at the scene of
apparent gunshot wounds, and a woman identified as Jennifer Guinn, 31, of
Hammond, mortally wounded.
Guinn was transported to Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus, where she
subsequently died.
Coroner Chuck Harris told the Chesterton Tribune today that both
Trinka and Guinn appear to have sustained multiple gunshot wounds. An
autopsy was likely to be performed in Mishawaka later today, Harris said.
The unnamed suspect was found at the scene--in a vehicle, in the
driveway--by responding officers, who took him into custody without
incident, PCSP Sgt. Larry LaFlower said.
Two firearms believed to have been used in the homicide, as well as shell
casings, were recovered at the scene, LaFlower also said.
The investigation is still ongoing, with detectives focusing their efforts
on the relationship--if any--between Trinka and Guinn and the suspect and on
the suspect’s motive, LaFlower added.
