VALPARAISO (AP) — A former prosecutor and town councilman has been sentenced to one year in jail for sexually assaulting a woman who was confined to a wheelchair.

Michael B. Haughee was found guilty Jan. 25 of sexual battery, criminal confinement and interference with the reporting of a crime.

Porter County Judge Mary Harper handed down the sentence Thursday.

Haughee is a former Lake County prosecutor and Hebron councilman. When his sentence is complete, he will have to register as a sex offender.

Haughee maintained his innocence in court. He said the jury was tired and confused when it reached its verdict.
