The Indiana State Police (ISP) is investigating the death of an inmate at the
Westville Correctional Facility.
According to a statement released on Friday by the Indiana Department of
Correction (DOC), Willis McCaster III, 26, of South Bend, was found dead in
his housing unit early Thursday morning.
McCaster’s death is being investigated by the ISP and the facility’s Internal
Affairs Bureau.
McCaster was serving a 10- and 15-year consecutive sentence for two counts of
aggravated battery. He was due to be released on September 19, 2018, the DOC
said, and had been sentenced to the DOC in Saint Joseph Superior Court on
Feb. 8, 2007.
“It is always devastating to lose a life, and the loss of this young man has
affected not only his family but facility staff as well as other offenders,”
Westville Correctional Facility Superintendent William Wilson said.
McCaster was receiving rehabilitative programming and was a participant in
the facility’s Faith and Character initiative, the DOC said.
