Portage Police have identified the woman found deceased on the CSX railroad tracks early Wednesday morning and are calling her death a suicide.

Sgt. Keith Hughes of PPD told the Chesterton Tribune on Thursday that the woman has been identified as Deborah Green, 56, of Portage, and said that Green tried to kill herself in this way once before, in April 2008, when she stopped her vehicle on a set of tracks and was struck by a train, seriously injured, and airlifted to a Chicago hospital.

At 4:03 a.m. the PPD was advised by CSX that a train had just struck a person on the tracks west of Samuelson Road. Officers and firefighters dispatched to the scene found Green lying between the rails. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
