WESTVILLE,
Ind. (AP) — A nearly head-on crash in northwestern Indiana has left one
person dead and three others critically injured.
LaPorte County
Chief Deputy Sheriff Jim Sosinski says a speeding SUV went left of center
on a curving rural road and struck a car, killing the car's driver and
injuring two young sisters riding in it.
Sosinski says
the crash killed 26-year-old Katherine Atkins of Valparaiso and injured
the SUV's driver, John Ray Mikle of Michigan City and 7-year-old Neilah
Maule and 5-year-old Jaydyn Maule. They're daughters of Atkins' boyfriend.
Mikle's age and girls' hometown isn't clear.
Sosinski says
rain prevented a medical helicopter from landing at the scene about 30
miles southwest of South Bend, so the injured went by ambulance to
hospitals in LaPorte and Michigan City.
