The Indiana State Police seized nearly 200 pounds of marijuana on Monday
after a traffic stop on the Indiana Toll Road in LaPorte County.
According to police, at 1:15 p.m. Tomasz Stanislaw Harasim, 26, was stopped
at the 61.5 mile marker, near the St. Joseph county line, for an unspecified
moving violation by Trooper Anthony Potesta. After talking to Harasim,
police said, Potesta suspected illegal activity and requested a K-9 unit
from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Police. Deputy Andrew Morse and his K-9
partner Mirza arrived at the scene and Mirza subsequently alerted to an
unknown amount of what was later discovered to be marijuana, police said.
A search warrant was obtained and executed and five large hockey-style bags
were recovered from Harasim’s 2009 Chrysler minivan, containing a total of
187 individual vacuum-sealed bags. Each individual bag was estimated to
contain one pound of hydroponic marijuana, police said. In addition, $16,318
in cash was recovered.
Police identified Harasim as a Polish national on a passport from Canada. He
was transported to LaPorte County Jail and charged with dealing in marijuana
over 10 pounds, a Class C felony punishable by a term of two to eight years;
and possession of marijuana greater than 30 grams, a Class D felony
punishable by a term of six months to three years.
