A Chesterton man died Monday
in a two vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 20 in Westchester Township, the
Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.
Police identified the victim
as Jared Altman, 19.
According to police, at 8:55
p.m. Altman was eastbound on U.S. 20 in a Ford Taurus, near Harrison Road,
when he lost control of his vehicle, crossed the center line, and collided
with a Chrysler Concord westbound on U.S. 20.
The driver of the Chrysler
was Emily Eckhart, 66, of Michigan City.
Altman was ejected from his
vehicle and sustained severe head injuries, police said. He was transported
to Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus, where he was pronounced dead.
Eckhart was extricated from
her vehicle by Chesterton firefighters and was also transported to Porter
hospital for treatment of severe leg injuries, police said.
Police said that the primary
factor in the crash was Altman’s high rate of speed. Results from a routine
toxicology screen are pending.
