A Chicago man standing in the middle lane of I-65 near Merrillville was
struck and killed by a semi, the Indiana State Police said.
The victim was identified as Zuhair M. Elturk, 33.
According to police, at 5:57 p.m. troopers were dispatched to a
semi/pedestrian accident in the northbound lanes of I-65 at the 253.8 mile
marker.
Preliminary investigation indicated that trucker Osmam Bangura, 37, of
Miami, was northbound in the center lane of I-65 when he struck Elturk,
police said.
Witnesses advised that Elturk “was standing in the center lane where three
other vehicles swerved and missed” him,” police said. “When they attempted
to help Elturk, he ran out in the center lane again and was struck by
Bangura’s semi.”
Bangura was not injured.
