Pedestrian struck and killed on Indiana 49

Back to Front Page

A Michigan City man was struck and killed by a vehicle on Sunday evening as he was trying to cross Ind. 49, near Indian Boundary Road, on foot.

Deputy Coroner Bob Byrd identified the man as Antonio Binion, 33. Binion died of blunt force trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene. Byrd told the Chesterton Tribune today that Binion’s family has been notified.

The Chesterton Police Department has not yet completed its investigation of the accident, but Det. Lt. Dave Cincoski of the CPD said that, because Binion was hit on the right side of his body, it would appear “preliminarily” that he was trying to cross from the east side of Ind. 49 to the west side.

The accident occurred approximately 50 yards south of the intersection of Indian Boundary Road, Byrd said.

The CPD has not released the name of the driver.

The Chesterton Fire Department responded to the scene at 7:23 p.m. to provide support for EMS personnel and crash investigators. It cleared the scene at 10:09 p.m.
