A Valparaiso woman accused of stabbing a Center Township man on Wednesday has been formally charged.

Billie Jo Moore, 49, of 403 E. Jefferson St. No. 2, was charged on Thursday with aggravated battery, a Class B felony punishable by a term of six to 20 years; and battery with a deadly weapon, a Class C felony punishable by a term of two to eight years.

According to the Porter County Sheriff’s Police, Moore had crashed her vehicle on Marigold Lane in Center Township, then went to a home in the 1900 block of Crescent Road, where a 64-year-old man happened to be outside retrieving his mail. Police said that Moore asked to use his phone, he invited her inside and left her in the kitchen, and then shortly thereafter Moore attacked him in the living room with a knife which he had put on the kitchen table.

The man sustained serious stab wounds to his chest and underwent emergency surgery at Porter Regional Hospital to repair damage near his heart. On Thursday morning he was reported in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

Police said that Moore—who was taken into custody after found hiding in the bushes near the man’s home—subsequently tested positive for cocaine and marijuana in her system.
