Service set for Albert Victor Crewe

Dune Acres resident Albert Victor Crewe, formerly of Palos Park, Ill., passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009 in Dune Acres. He was 82.

Dr. Crewe was born on Feb. 18, 1927 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England to Wilfred and Edith (Lawrence) Crewe. In 1949 he married Doreen Blunsdon.

He was Wrather Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago, former director of the Argonne National Laboratory, and a recipient of the Michelson Medal. He invented the scanning transmission electron microscope that took the first still and motion pictures of atoms, a technology that provided new insights into atomic interaction and that enabled significant advances in, and had wide reaching implications for, the biomedical, semiconductor, and computing industries.

Dr. Crewe was also a sculptor and pastel drawing artist, an avid archer, and a photographer. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a member of the Dune Acres Environmental Advisory Board.

Dr. Crewe is survived by his wife, Doreen, of Dune Acres; a son David Crewe (wife Jennifer) of Sunnyvale, Calif.; daughters Jennifer Crewe (husband Oliver) of New York, N.Y., Sarah Crewe (Patrick) of Ruidoso, N.M., and Elizabeth (Mark) Crewe of La Grange, Ill.; a brother Terrance Crewe (Jennifer) of Almondbury, Yorkshire, England; and 10 grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held after the New Year by The University of Chicago. Cremation will take place at Heritage Crematory in Portage. Memorials may be given to the Crewe Caregivers Trust, Chase Bank, 106 Broadway, Chesterton, Ind. and the VNA Hospice Foundation at 501 Marquette St., Valparaiso, Ind. 46383.
