John Ols dies at 80

John Ols, age 80, of Porter, IN, passed away on Monday June 29, 2009 at Porter Hospital Valparaiso Campus.

He was born on December 1, 1928 in Knox, Indiana to Chris E. & Pauline (Fisher) Ols.

On January 18, 1954 in LaPorte, IN he married Joie L. Meredith, who survives in Porter.

He is also survived by son Mark E. (Patricia) Ols of Porter, son-in-law Lee Fleischman of Thousand Oaks, Calif., brother Paul Ols of Knox, sisters; Betty (Bill) Hollandsworth of Valparaiso, Mary Ann Schroeder of Pine Township, Patty Matzat, Jean Phristry, Joan Ols, Jane Ols and Dolly (Tom) Matzat all of Knox, grandchildren; Kelly (Damien) Unland of Hobart, Kathleen (Zakk) Mitchell of Porter, Matthew Ols, Aaron, Gregory and Laura Fleishman all of Thousand Oaks, Calif., great grandchildren; Shae, Cheyann and Angelina Unland all of Hobart.

He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Pamela Fleischman in 2005.

John worked as a security supervisor for Midwest Steel. He served in the US Marine Corp. as an embassy guard in Rome and London. While on guard duty at the first meeting of the general assembly of the United Nations in Flushing Meadows, New York, he met Eleanor Roosevelt.

He was an EMT and a member of the Knox Masonic Lodge and the Chesterton American Legion Post 170.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday July 2, 2009 at 10:00 a.m., with Pastor Larry Starett officiating, at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton.

Cremation to follow services at Heritage Crematory, Portage.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday July 1, 2009 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials for John may be made to the Porter County Hospice.
