Bernard Gannon, Sr. dies at 88

Bernard F. Gannon, Sr., 88, of Valparaiso, passed away at the VA Medical Center in Marion, Monday, June 22, 2009.

He was born in Chicago, June 30, 1920 the son of Frank and Lucy (Stolinski) Gannon, both of whom preceded him in death.

He was also preceded in death by wife, Anna M. Gannon. They were married September 5, 1941.

He is survived by children, Lawrence Gannon of St. Paul, Minn., Rita (James) Matthys of Jackson Twp., Michael Gannon of Fremont, Lucy Cress of Fremont, Bernard (Carolyn Wright) Gannon Jr., of Kouts, Joan (Richard) Evans of Fremont, and Debbie (Kevin) Major of Hobart; 24 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren; a brother, Martin (Virginia) Gannon of Valparaiso, and special friend, Jule Gannon.

He was also preceded in death by sisters, Margaret Peterson and Josephine Gannon and brother-in-law, Harry Peterson.

As a resident of Valparaiso for the past 72 years, Bernard was a tool and die maker for McGill's and General American in East Chicago, Ind., retiring in 1988. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, being an usher at the church for 67 years, a Veteran US Army Corporal serving in 1942 and 1943, a member of the 4th Degree Fr. Sorin Assembly with the Valparaiso Knights of Columbus Council #738, the State Deputy for the Indiana Knights of Columbus from 1988 to 1990, the Father of the Gilbault Raffle, and recipient of Sagamore of the Wabash.

A funeral mass, Rev. Joseph Pawlowski officiating, will be at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, 1855 W. Harrison Blvd., Valparaiso. Interment at St. Paul Cemetery, Valparaiso.

Friends may call at the Dykes Funeral Home, 2305 N. Campbell St., Valparaiso, Friday, June 26, from 3 to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Wake service, and then Saturday morning, June 27, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Memorials may be made to Gilbault, and the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System, Marion, IN.
