Gerald 'Jerry' L. Proper passes away at age 75

Gerald ‘Jerry’ L. Proper, age 75, passed away on March 30, 2020 in Naples, FL, following several years of illness.

He was born on July 19, 1944, to Frank and Ruth (Ebert) Proper in Blue Island, IL.

Jerry is survived by his brothers Frank Proper of Chesterton, IN and Leroy Proper of Valparaiso, IN, his partner and caretaker Patricia Pateria of Naples, FL, longtime Chesterton friend and caretaker Jim Howser of Naples, FL, nieces, nephews, and numerous friends in both Indiana and Florida.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Frank and Ruth Proper, his brother Richard Proper and sister-in-law Georgia (Stewart) Proper, both of Phoenix, AZ, sister-in-law Pat (Meyne) Proper and nephew Mike Proper, both of Portage, IN, longtime friend Patty Petty of Portage, IN, , his loving niece Lindsey Proper, of Valparaiso, IN, and his ex-wife and friend Lynne Proper, of Chesterton, IN.

Jerry moved to Chesterton, IN with his family in August of 1954. He was a classmate of the Chesterton High School Class of 1962. While still working at Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Jerry and his wife, the former Lynne Billings, purchased the Hide-A-Way Lounge and Restaurant, a successful “hotspot” in Chesterton, IN (presently known as Val’s Pizza). Jerry was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Calumet Chapter of the Masonic Lodge in Chesterton, along with being a member of a local barbershop quartet for many years. In 1987, Jerry set off for warmer climates and moved to Naples, FL, where he purchased a carpet cleaning business, which he successfully ran until his illness. Jerry had interests in NASCAR/stock car racing and golf, his main incentive for relocating in Florida.

Jerry will be laid to rest at Chesterton Cemetery. His family plans to hold a Celebration of Life at a later time to commemorate his life with family and friends.

Arrangements are being handled by Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, Chesterton, IN.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association, cancer charities of your choosing, or VITAS Hospice, Naples, FL.
