Berthel (Pass) McCombs passes away at age 89

Berthel (Pass) McCombs, age 89 of Chesterton, IN passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2020, with two of her five children by her side.

She was born on July 31,1930, in Franklin County Alabama to Holland and Lula (Rich) Pass.

On September 18, 1948, in Haleyville, Alabama, she married Woodrow McCombs. They had 58 beautiful years together before his death in 2007.

Berthel is survived by her children, Patricia McCombs of Menlo Park, CA, Jimmy (Marsha) McCombs of Zolfo Springs, FL, Paul (Barbara) McCombs of Mesa, AZ, Linda (John) Didelot of Chesterton, IN, and William (Gail) McCombs of Westville, IN; brother, Rayburn (Jean) Pass of Porter, IN; grandchildren, Alicia, Michael, Gabriel, Darrin, Laura, Karen, Arin, Andrew, Philip, Hayley, Steven, Lindsey, and Sara; great grandchildren: Anika, Eva, Taylor, Will, Marquise, Rashad, Mariah, Roman, Tekodah, Cole, EJ, Ava, Gage, Caryss, Anna, Penelope, Fitzgerald, Xavier, Victoria, Jerry, Fiona, Sasha, Zoey, Carter, Evan, and one on the way; great great-grandchildren, Avery and Lukas, and many loving nieces and nephews all over the United States.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, A.D. Pass; sisters, Ruby Cook and Pauline Millican.

Berthel was a homemaker who made the best coca and biscuits. She was an avid golfer who participated in many tournaments here in Northwest Indiana before her retirement to Alabama, and then on to Florida, where she was active in the Brookside Bluffs golfing community. Berthel enjoyed many adventures in her lifetime. She was a member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, and she was close to getting her pilot's license from Porter County Airport where she and Woody housed their Cessna Skyhawk. After retiring to their hometown in Alabama in 1988, she and Woody decided to pull up their roots and spent five years traveling the lower 48 states in their 5th wheel. Berthel was a great navigator, and eventually, found their final stop in Zolfo Springs, Florida, where they spent the rest of their lives together until Woody passed away at the almost age of 82. At the insistence of her family, Berthel moved back up North to be with some of her kids, grand kids, and great-grand kids.

No services will be held per Berthelís request. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in Wauchula, FL. Arrangements made with Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, Chesterton, IN.
