Leo Gordon “Polly”
Lindquist, lifelong area resident, passed away January 19, 2018. He was born
on June 18, 1921 in Porter, IN to John and Margaret (Sullivan) Lindquist.
Gordon was a 1940
graduate of Chesterton High School. Polly was a quarterback and co-captain
of the first CHS 6-man football team that were 1939 state champs. Gordon
bravely served in the Navy from 1942 through 1945 during World War II as a
gunner’s mate 3rd class on the USS Nevada and the USS Hancock. He married
Mary Louise Slivka of Whiting, IN on May 29, 1948. Mary passed away in 1993.
Polly was currently an officer and a founding member of the Porter VFW. He
was also a member of the Chesterton American Legion and the Moose. Gordon
was an usher at St. Patrick’s Church for 35 years and was employed for Amoco
Oil Company in Whiting.
He is survived by
his daughters, Sharon (Gene) Sufana of Chesterton, and Jean Lindquist Welton
of Greenwood, IN; granddaughters, Bridgit Sufana of Chesterton, Hillary (Dan
Searfoss) Welton, and Lauren Welton of Greenwood, IN; sister in law, Agnes
Lindquist of Chesterton, and other family.
his best friend, Jean Ellis of Porter, VFW Post 2511, and his other Porter
and Chesterton friends.
A Mass of Christian
Burial will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Road,
Chesterton, IN, 46304, on Monday, January 29, 2018, at 10:00 a.m.
Visitation will be
held on Monday, January 29, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at
the Church. Burial of cremains will take place at a later date at Chesterton
