Kenneth Harry “Big
Red” Westergren, age 89 of Chesterton, IN, passed away on Tuesday, April 24,
2018, in Valparaiso, IN.
He was born on
September 16, 1928, in McCool Junction, Nebraska, to Harry and Grace Viola
Kenneth is survived
by his son, Michael (Jane) Westergren; daughter, Amy (Lee)
Westergren-Amlicke; grandchildren, Erin (Mike) O’Dea, Debra (Dale) Baker,
Greg (Kristen) Bates, Jillian (Jake) Cooney and Maggie Bates;
great-grandchildren, Kody, Amara, Lyra, Logan, Liam, Asher, Maliyah and
Stella; sisters, Inez Zane and Phyllis (Dewey) Ward; in-laws, Marcia
Nowatzke, Faye Westergren, Barbara Mullin, and Evelyn Sobieski and several
beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in
death by his wife, Donna (Beschinski) Westergren; his parents; brothers,
Richard, Robert, and Larry Westergren; and in-laws, Patricia Zane, and John
Kenneth was a U.S.
Army veteran, 82nd Airborne Division, and a long-time member and active
patron of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He loved bowling and gardening.
Kenneth was an avid Republican much to the disdain of his daughter. He liked
to fish, watch Nascar and was a huge sports fan. Kenneth could never tell a
full joke because he interrupted himself with infectious belly laughter.
There will be a
mass of Christian burial on Friday, April 27, 2018, at 10:30 a.m., at St.
Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Avenue, Chesterton, IN 46304, with
Father Jon Plavcan officiating. Burial will follow at Chesterton Cemetery.
There will be a
visitation held on Friday, April 27, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.,
at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304.
