Marvin R. Syren passes away at age 84

Marvin “Marv” R. Syren, age 84, of Portage, IN, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, October 17, 2018.

He was born on November 4, 1933, in Chicago, IL, the son of Yngve and Florence Syren.

Marv is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Karen (Smith) Syren; son, Todd (Kim) Syren; grandchildren, Taylor (Billy) Mayer, Riley Syren and Jackson Syren; great-grandson Will, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Royce and Wes Syren; son, Scott Syren.

Marv started a photo club named The Shutter Bugs. He was the captain of the wrestling team at the University of Illinois where he also received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees and a partial Ph.D. In 1956, he was the person mainly responsible for the resurgence of wrestling as an interscholastic sport in Gary, IN, and then taught, coached and retired from Gary Wirt High School in 1991. Marv was inducted into Indiana Coaches Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2017. He was the former President of the Calumet Region Montessori Parent Group and the former President for the NWI Kidney Foundation. He was a member of the Marquette Park Methodist Church. Marv was also on numerous boards for the Portage and State YMCA, Portage Chamber, NWI Trade council and the Wizard of Oz committee. He was very active in Portage and Porter County and state Republican campaigns. Marv was a delegate to two Republican National Conventions and had attended the George W. Bush Inauguration. He was a member of the Masons, Shriner Orak Temple, Kappa Sigma Fraternity and University of Illinois Alumni Association. Marv was awarded the James H. Hartung Award given by the Northwest Indiana World Trade Council. He was the owner of Syren Management. Marv loved teaching, reading the local newspapers, growing his flowers and plants, enjoying his lilacs bushes and, most of all, his family.

Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2018, at 12:00 p.m., at Portage First United Methodist Church, 2637 McCool Rd., Portage, IN, 46368, with Pastor Michael Lawson officiating.

Memorial Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2018, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at the Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honor of Marv may be made to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, http://foundation.luriechildrens.org, or the Aquatorium Society, 607 South Lake Street, Suite A, Gary, IN, 46403.

A Life Celebration will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2018, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, Post 260 in Portage.
