(Becker) Jacobsen, 84, passed away on November 12, 2018 at Cumberland Pointe
Health Campus in West Lafayette, IN. Previously, she had been a longtime
resident of Chesterton, Indiana, for more than 60 years.
Dorothy (Dot) was
born on September 5, 1934, in Gary, IN, as the only child to parents Marius
and Vera Becker. She attended Indiana University-Northwest and worked at US
Henry William Jacobsen, Jr. on June 16, 1957, and was a stay-at-home mom
until the loss of her husband on January 7, 1973.
Dorothy devoted her
life to her children, Joan, Susan, Paul, and April, who at the time of
Henry’s death ranged from 14 years to 4 months old. Dot went all out for
holidays, making them magical for her children. She took her kids on driving
vacations to Florida yearly. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She
enthusiastically attended most of her children’s many events. At the 1976
Girls Sports Banquet, she received the MVP fan award for her support and for
the many times she was the only parent at away events. She sent all her
children to college and provided them a debt-free education. It was not easy
being a single parent, but she always did it with such grace and love.
Dorothy was very
close to her mother and mother-in-law, Frieda Jacobsen, and helped care for
them as they aged. She was also very close to her sister-in-law and
brother-in-law, Janet and Roger LaHayne, who helped her raise her family.
After Henry’s death, she worked at Jacobsen’s Inc. in Merrillville, IN;
Joyce Manufacturing in Gary, IN; and Margie Korshak Public Relations in
