Celebration of Life Tuesday for Paula Ann Orthman

Paula Ann Orthman, age 71, of Valparaiso, Indiana, passed away on Friday, March 23.

With a brilliant mind, a gentle hand, a generous heart, and a wicked sense of humor, Paula was a beloved wife, mother and Nana to her four grandchildren and a lifelong educator in Northwest Indiana.

Born on January 29, 1947, to Lawrence and Irene (Pankowski) Murray, Paula was a graduate of LaPorte High School (class of 65’), received her BA of Mathematics from Dominican College in Racine, WI, and her Masters Degree from Purdue University. She also attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI, and Argonne National Laboratories, Chicago.

She is survived by her devoted husband of over 47 years, Erwin; children, Kevin (Wendy), Andrea (Michael) Slawski, Jonathan (Erica); grandchildren, Charlie, Philip, Ellinor, Truman; siblings, Marti (Daniel) Fridh and Tom (Renee); aunt, Jean Pankowski; several nieces and nephews; and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Irene Murray.

Paula loved spending time and traveling with her family, was a voracious reader, a loyal friend, a creative genius, engaged student of life, and an innovative educator. For nearly 40 years, she taught in the Michigan City area school system where she retired as the Chair of the Math Department, and at Purdue University, North Central, for over 25 years. Throughout her life, Paula lent her talent, creativity, kindness, and wit to numerous organizations including; Welcome Wagon, Meals on Wheels, Girl Scouts, 4-H, TOPS of Westville, the Retired Teachers Association, and served on Publishing Councils for mathematics textbooks.

The family invites you to celebrate Paula’s life, from 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday March 27, at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN, 46304, with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m., CDT.

The funeral mass for Paula will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 204 N. Ohio St., Wanatah, IN, on Wednesday, March 28, at 10 a.m., CDT. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Wanatah, IN.
