Mary A. Hocker, age
95 of Chesterton, passed away on November 13, 2017.
She was born on
August 11, 1922 in St. Paul, Indiana to Charles D. and Ruby Lavonne
(Garrett) Apple. Her mother died when she was eight in 1930. Her father
married Flora Hurst in 1941. They both preceded her in death.
On October 6, 1943,
in Dover, Delaware, she married the love of her life, John W. Hocker, who
preceded her in death in 2010 after 66 years of marriage.
She is survived by
her daughter, Anne Marie (Terry) Hiestand; grandchildren: Sarah (Scott)
Lawson of Venice, Florida, Keith (Carrie) Hiestand of Saukville, Wisconsin,
Amy Marie (Paul) Klodzen of Fishers, Indiana, Caroline (Dan) Faylor of
Auburn, Indiana, and David (Martha) Hiestand of Chesterton;
great-grandchildren: Allison Klodzen, John (Jack) Faylor, Elizabeth Lawson,
Benjamin Hiestand, Samuel Klodzen, Charles Faylor, and Ruby Hiestand.
She had two
brothers who preceded her in death during childhood, Robert F and Charles R.
Mary was a
proficient comptometer operator during the war and after Anne graduated high
school she worked for Southern States Co-op in Lexington, Kentucky as its
bookkeeper for five years. After moving to Versailles, Kentucky in 1970 she
worked in a cottage industry making decorative trapunto pillows for local
retail shops. She and John were active in the Eastern Star and she served as
Worthy Grand Matron. They lived in Chesterton part-time from 1983 to 1990.
She and John spent winters in Lakeland, Florida, for twelve years until the
traveling became too strenuous. They lived on Johnís family farm in Beaver
Dam, Kentucky, from 1990 to 2002. When Johnís health began failing, they
moved back to Chesterton to be closer to Terry, Anne and their family. She
was also a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and was a member
of the United Methodist Women.
