Services Thursday for Everett C. Swanson, 91

Lifelong Chesterton resident Everett C. Swanson, 91, died Sunday, April 9, 2017.

He was born in Chesterton on January 27, 1926, the son of Edward A. Swanson and Esther (Carlson) Swanson.

He graduated from Chesterton High School Class of 1944. He served in the Army in the Philippines during the Second World War. Everett worked for 43 years as an Interlocking Operator for the New York Central Railroad and its successors. He worked at locations in Porter, Portage, Gary and Hartsdale. He was a lifelong member of Augsburg Lutheran Church.

Everett's large garden provided enjoyment to many in the community. He was known for his daffodils and roses. He hybridized daylilies and donated produce to the local food bank. He was a lifelong Cubs fan with an extensive knowledge of baseball.

He is survived by his sister-in-law Doris Swanson. He is survived by two nieces, Claire Swanson of Montville Township, NJ, and Laura (Tim) Schoenecker of Glen Carbon, IL; a nephew, Howard (Carolyn) Swanson of Atlanta, GA; grand-nieces Kristin Anne and Rachel Lynn Schoenecker.

Along with his parents, Everett was preceded in death by three brothers, E. Marvin Swanson, C. Howard Swanson and Eldon A. Swanson.

The funeral service is planned for Noon on Thursday, April 13, at Augsburg Lutheran Church in Porter. Pastor Erik Bernth will officiate. Burial will be in the Augsburg Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to Noon on Thursday at Augsburg Lutheran Church, in Porter.

Memorials may be made to the Augsburg Lutheran Church or the Moody Bible Institute.

Everett was a caring, gracious, helpful, and gentle soul. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
