Phelim Cyril Cafferty, Sr., age 79, of Chesterton, Indiana, formerly of Chicago, IL, and a native of Doohoma, County Mayo, Ireland, has passed away.

He was the precious husband and best friend of Anne Mary Durkin, and loving father of Margaret Anne (Peg) and Terence Gorman, Patrick Kiernan and Kristin Cafferty, Siobhan Marie and Christopher Rowney, Phelim Cyril Cafferty, Jr., the late Liam Jude Cafferty and adored father-in-law of Tracy and Brian Killian.

He was special father to James and Kristen Saranteas and cherished Papa to Keeley Elizabeth and Conall Cafferky Gorman; Jack Ryan, Quinn Patrick, Kathryn Mary and Bridget Ellen Cafferty; Christopher Jude and Cathal Padraic Rowney; Kiera Anne Cafferty Killian and Mason David Killian. He was the beloved brother of Mary and John Jaros, Ann Cafferky and Breege and Michael McDonnell, and dearest brother-in-law of John and Mary Catherine Durkin, Sheila Durkin, Michael and Tammy Durkin, Dianne Durkin and Ann Cafferty. He was also a loving uncle to many wonderful nieces and nephews and special godfather to John Durkin, David Jaros, Colleen Cafferty and Katie McDonnell.

He was preceded in death by his parents Patrick and Catherine (Scanlon) Cafferky; brothers Padraic, Michael, Henry and Vincent Cafferky; his parents-in-law William and Sabina (Barrett) Durkin; and brothers-in-law Thomas and Cherry Durkin, William and Martin Durkin.

Phelim shared many happy times with his treasured Scanlon, Curtin, Sweeney, McCafferty, Gaughan, Pfandler and Barry cousins. Many joyful holidays and memorable family festivities were celebrated with the Gorman, Rader, Rowney and Masunas families.

Devoted follower of Saint Jude Thaddeus, former member of Saint Columba Parish, Chicago, IL, retired member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors Local #2. Member of the Knights of Columbus, and member of the Saint Cyril Society of Mount Carmel High School, Chicago, IL.

He leaves behind many dear relations, neighbors and friends. We are incredibly grateful to the doctors, nurses and staff members at Northwestern Memorial Hospital for the love, care, and generous support they so graciously provided during Phelim's stay.

Visitation Friday, 4 to 8 p.m., at Elmwood Chapel, 11200 S. Ewing Avenue, Chicago.

Visitation on Saturday, June 24, 2017, from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m., at Saint Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Ave., Chesterton, IN, 46304. Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Burial in Doohoma Cemetery, Doohoma, County Mayo, Ireland.

In lieu of flowers, a donation for the Liam Jude Cafferty Scholarship may be sent to Mount Carmel High School, at 6410 S. Dante Ave., Chicago, IL, 60637, or a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Donations are much appreciated.
