Services Saturday for George Harvey Rhed

George Harvey Rhed, of Chesterton, passed away on September 6, 2017, at the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso, Indiana, surrounded by his family.

He was born on April 19, 1933, to Paynter and Mary Elizabeth (Girolamo) Rhed in Chesterton, Indiana.

He graduated from Chesterton High School in 1951, where he excelled in academics, baseball, basketball, and track. He attended Purdue University and Valparaiso University. He was invited to the Olympic trials in track and was asked to try out for MLB as well. He accepted his invitation to MLB tryouts but was drafted to the Korean War prior to taking that opportunity. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany. He was known to many as G.I. He worked as a Radiation Laboratory Supervisor at N. Wood Counter Laboratory in Chicago, Illinois, for over 40 years, assembling Geiger counters.

On January 12, 1963, in Valparaiso Indiana, he married Linda (Tofte) Rhed. They were married 54 years.

He is survived by his wife, Linda, and their three sons: Matthew (Shannon) Rhed, George Rhed, and Drew (Gretchen) Rhed, all of Chesterton. Also, 8 grandchildren: Beth (Ken) Soria of Westville, Samantha (Casey) Cole, Tony Rhed of Chesterton, Bailey and Paynter Rhed of New Prairie, Indiana, and Lucas, Gabrielle, and Dominic Rhed, of Chesterton. Also, two great-grandsons, Carson and Blake. He is also survived by his sister, Bertha Still (late Charles), of Chesterton. In addition, many brother and sister-in-laws in Valparaiso and Wanatah, Indiana and his large extended family in Illinois and Ohio. He received care at his end of life from caregivers, Marek and Ivan, as well as Patty, Danielle, Jack, Pastor Forwalter, and many others from the VNA Hospice.

He was preceded in death by his parents. George was an avid fisherman, music-lover, and reader. He enjoyed watching sporting events, especially those played by his grandchildren. His kindness and smile will be deeply missed by the many who knew him. His greatest moments were time with his family, whom he loved immensely.

Family will receive guests at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN, 46304, on Friday, September 8, 2017, from 4-8 p.m.

Funeral Services will be at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 9. Burial will be at Chesterton Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to VNA Hospice of Northwest Indiana.
