Carrol “Gus” E.
Gustafson, age 88 of Chesterton, passed away on Monday, February 20, 2017,
at Porter Regional Hospital.
He was born on
March 26, 1928, in Porter, IN, to Edgar Gustafson and Helen (Hjelm) Janowski,
both of whom preceded him in death.
On June 11, 1955,
at Augsburg Lutheran Church, he married Carol (Ahrendt) Gustafson, who
preceded him in death in 2010.
He is survived by
his children: Greg (Hilda) Gustafson of Raleigh/Singapore, Brian Gustafson
(former wife Suzie) of Porter, IN, and Suzy (Ralph) Diaz of Lakes of the
Four Seasons; his grandchildren: Eric Gustafson, Nick Gustafson (Meghan),
David Diaz, Brian Gustafson, Jr., and Danielle Diaz (Cesar); his
great-grandchildren, Dean and Emily Gustafson; his brother, Buck (Belle)
Gustafson of Chesterton; as well as his special caregiver, Linda, and many
nieces and nephews.
He is also preceded
in death by his sister, Velma Machin, and his step-father, Bill Janowski.
Gus was a proud
Army Veteran who served in the Korean War. He worked as an Engineering
Technician for Amoco Oil Company for forty-six years. He was also a longtime
member of Augsburg Lutheran Church and the Chesterton Police Commission. Gus
was a volunteer fireman for the Chesterton Fire Department, was a member of
the VFW Post 2511, a member of the Chesterton Senior Bowling League, and was
State Park Little League President. Gus enjoyed smoking his pipe. He also
was an amateur Ham Radio operator. He loved gardening and camping and
fishing with his family. He also enjoyed playing his ukulele. What gave Gus
the most joy was just being with family.
will be held on Friday, February 24, 2017, at 1 p.m., at White-Love Funeral
Home, 525 South Second Street, Chesterton, with Pastor Erik Bernth
officiating. The family will receive family and friends on Friday, from 10
a.m. until time of service, at the funeral home.
