Service Tuesday for Ruth A. 'Corky' Johnson

Ruth A. “Corky” Johnson, 87, of Valparaiso passed away Thursday, April 6, 2017.

She was born July 12, 1929, in East Gary, IN, to Carl and Mary Ellen (Cooper) DeHaven.

Corky graduated from Jackson Township High School and worked at JCPenney and TJ Middle School in Valparaiso. She enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, but her true passion was feeding and taking care of her family. Corky will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was the last family member of her generation and will be dearly missed.

On June 20, 1948, in Valparaiso, Corky married Harold L. Johnson, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by their children: Sharon (Bob) McCasland of Valparaiso, Sue (Bill) Andrews of Swainsboro, GA, and Michael Dowd of Indianapolis; grandchildren: Melissa (Jeff) Ofman, Rebecca (Doug) Barach, and Jessica Andrews; great-grandchildren: Cadence and Cole Ofman; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 11 siblings: Lola (Harvey) Kremke, Rudolph DeHaven, Don (Iva) DeHaven, Elizabeth (Alvin) Thorne, Francis (Charles) Dowd, Jack (Annagrace) DeHaven, Howard (Audrey) DeHaven, Carl (Jean) DeHaven, Jim (Viola) DeHaven, Laura (Henry) Moser, and Marian (Clarence) Lambert.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Road, Valparaiso, with burial to follow at Graceland Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday, April 10, from 3:00-7:00 p.m., at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to VNA Hospice of NWI or the First United Methodist Church.
