He was born on June 3, 1937, in Chesterton, to Felix and Philomena (Phyllis) (Wiesemann) Groff.

He is survived by his daughter, Margo (Tim) Winey of Chesterton; sisters, Patricia Johnson of Chesterton and Joanne Marcoff of Hobart, IN; granddaughter, Paige (Jason) Scheuer; brother-in-law and fishing buddy, Roger (Geraldine) Hewitt of Chesterton, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Ron served in the U.S. Army Reserves and retired from Inland Steel after a life threatening accident. Ron is remembered as a selfless, kind and gentle soul who always put others before himself. Despite his physical condition, he always maintained a positive can-do attitude and sense of humor. Ron was an outdoors enthusiast enjoying hunting and fishing and their balance of conservation. Traveling was another passion which he and Rochelle enjoyed together. They especially loved to spend time in the mountains camping, hiking, fishing and watching for wildlife. Ron was thrilled to have taken some recent trips to Colorado to spend time with his grandchildren and teach them how to fly fish. Here at home, he loved spending time with his best little buddy, Cooper.
