Mary Ellen Henkel went home to Jesus on April 13, 2017, at 8:45 p.m., at VNA Hospice Care in Valparaiso, surrounded by her family.

She was born on March 7, 1936, to James and Inez Twigg, in Longview, IL.

She married Allen Henkel on June 4, 1955, in Philo, IL. They later divorced, and he survives. They raised five children together. Mary spent most of her life in Chesterton, IN, but also lived in Valparaiso and West Lafayette, IN, and Naperville, IL.

Mary loved the Lord. She enjoyed reading her bible, playing the organ, riding roller coasters and water slides, and, for a short time, riding her motorcycle. She also enjoyed food – cooking, canning, baking, and eating. She loved spending time with her family and friends. Mary was an 18-year cancer survivor.

Mary was active in her church. Before her retirement, Mary was employed at Costasí and then Wise Way supermarkets in Valparaiso and Chesterton, and at the Spring Valley Homeless Shelter in Valparaiso.

Mary is survived by her sons, James Henkel of Liberty Hill, TX; Michael Henkel (Lisa) of Naperville, IL; and Thomas Henkel (Kim) of Chesterton, IN; her daughter, Cathy Anderson of West Lafayette, IN; her sister, Louise Cler of Urbana, IL; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and her dog, Baxter.

She is preceded in death by her son, Philip Henkel; her parents; a brother, Mark Twigg; and a sister, Marguerite Marlatt.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to VNA Hospice Center (VNAnwi.org) at 2401 Valley Drive, Valparaiso, Indiana; the American Cancer Society (cancer.org); or the National Parkinson Foundation (Parkinson.org).

The family would like to thank the fantastic, caring staff at the hospice center for their dedication to Mary during her stay.
