James C. Douglas passes away at age 78

Father, grandfather, teacher, brother, and friend, James C. Douglas, 78, of Valparaiso, passed away Sunday, November 5, 2017, at his home.

He was born October 19, 1939, in Gary, the son of Edgar C. and Florence G. (Welch) Douglas.

Jim retired in 2007 after 45 years of teaching at Portage Township Schools and Indiana University. Never at a loss for a story or sharing a fact, his passion for learning and helping others were the core of his character.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years on July 24, 2009, Elizabeth A. Douglas (Messman).

He is survived by his two daughters, Lisa (Bob) Filipek and Michelle (Jeff) Kerr; four grandchildren, Sara, Doug, Alexandra, and William; brother, Bill (Judy) Douglas of San Antonio, FL; brother-in-law Bob (Diana) Messman of New Haven, IN; nephew Jason Messman and niece Lynnette Hill.

Visitation was held on Saturday, November 11, 2017, from 8-10 a.m., at Bartholomew Funeral Home, 102 Monroe Street, Valparaiso.

Private grave site services took place at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice in his name.
