Dona Gembala passes away remembrance, July 31

Back To Front Page

Dona Gembala, 83, left this corporeal world on April 20, 2017, at Franciscan Hospital in Michigan City, having succumbed to pancreatic cancer.

Born in Chicago on July 31, 1933, to John (Jack) and Sophia Gembala, Dona was a lifelong resident of Porter Beach, where her parents owned “Shack du Lac” on what was then known as Harmony Hill.

As a teenager, Dona waitressed each summer at Johnson’s Inn at Johnson Beach. Upon graduation from Shurz High School in Chicago, Dona began her career as an executive secretary known for her dedication and insistence on perfection. For many years Dona was the executive assistant to the president of Montgomery Ward & Co., and took the train to Porter Beach from Chicago on weekends. In retirement Dona moved to Porter Beach full time.

She will be very missed by her longtime companion Robert Poch, also by her many dear friends including the Porter Beach community, god-daughter Kimberly Traxler, of Arlington Heights, Illinois, nephew John Gembala, of Spring, Texas, and Karen and Cyndi, her nieces.

Dona would like if her Porter Beach community and friends would join to scatter her ashes in her beloved rock garden for what would have been her 84th birthday, July 31st at 5:00 p.m. for a sunset service. Join us for food and beverage and a lantern lighting in Dona’s memory at her favorite time of day. She was a night owl as many knew.
