Stephen Frederick Homner, 67 of Chesterton, passed away Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017.

He was born Feb. 25, 1950, in Joliet, Ill., to the late Edward and Betty (Gurley) Homner.

Steve graduated from Horace Mann High School in Gary, and later from Indiana University Northwest with a degree in teaching. He worked for U.S. Steel and later as an Insurance Agent for Allstate for over 20 years.

Steve loved and was very passionate about writing music, singing karaoke, and sports. He had a gift when it came to coaching. He coached baseball, softball, and basketball for over 30 years, and won countless championships. His love of coaching and music was known by all who knew him. It didn’t matter whether he knew you or not, he would sing to you anytime, anywhere. His music will live on forever, just as the love we all have for him.

Steve will also be remembered for his fun, energetic, and intense personality. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. As Steve would say, “Learning is nothing, remembering is everything.” We will always remember!

Steve is survived by his former wife of 35 years, Debbie Homner; children: Kristin (John) Balon of Chesterton, Michael Homner of Chesterton, Karie Allen of Westville, Scott Homner of Chesterton; grandchildren: Kaylie, Taylor, Kyler, Leyton, Liam; and brother, Dan (Sally) Homner of Crown Point.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, Aug. 20, at 4 p.m. at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Road in Valparaiso, with a visitation from 1 p.m. until the time of service.
