Services Wednesday for Rev H. Kendall Nickell

Back To Front Page

Reverend H. Kendall Nickell, age 85, went home to be with the Lord on December 21, 2016. The words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant” sounded through Heaven.

On July 28, 1931, he was born to Luther and Arzetta (Wilcox) Nickell in Alton, IL.

He is survived by his beloved wife Esther, son Rev. Kendall (Melissa) Nickell, daughter Denisa (Marwan) Hanania, grandsons Daniel (Kristine), Max, Eli, Caleb, Nick, Tommy, Levi, and great-grandsons Jedidiah and Zeke.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Vera and Ruth.

Rev. Nickell loved to lead people to Jesus. His congregations followed his lead because they knew he was genuine. The love of Christ was so evident in him that strangers often told him their life stories.

A bi-vocational pastor who worked for Gary-Hobart Water Corp., he built churches by pouring over his Bible and the building plans. As a pastor he defined leadership by example. If the church needed a new roof, he was on the rafters hammering in shingles. If the church flooded, he was first to wade in with a mop. He was a man of great faith whose prayers were fueled by compassion. Pastor Nickell served churches in Hessville, Hammond, Lake Station, Michigan City, South Haven, Hobart, and Chesterton.

He was generous with his time, his money, and his willingness to serve. His gentle, teasing, sense of humor endeared him to all ages. His commitment to family made it easy for them to believe in a loving, heavenly father. He leaves behind a legacy of eternal value.

Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 6941 Central Avenue, Portage, IN, 46368, with Rev. S. Daniel Hendon officiating.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Online condolences to the family may be made at
